A special thank you to Hayley Thomas for her wonderful story about our Cancer Survivorship Series that appeared in last Tuesdays Paso Robles Press newspaper! You rock, Hayley! Read the article below: New survivorship series paints a better life after cancer First educational program slated for today at Twin Cities Community Hospital Hayley Thomas Of the Paso Robles Press Breast cancer survivor Shannon DAcquisto knows just how difficult it can be for cancer survivors – along with their friends and families – to cope with the multitude of concerns that tend to crop up on the road to wellness. In an effort to meet those challenges, The Cancer Support Community recently launched a free Cancer Survivorship Series running through June. According to D’Acquisto, who serves as the cancer survivorship series director and as a Cancer Support Community board member, the talks offer support to a growing population. “The good news about cancer is that, within the last 10 to 15 years, survivorship rates have gone way up,” said D’Acquisto. “More people are living, more people are living longer and more people are completing treatment and entering remission.” However, graduating from care can bring up a “Pandora’s box” of new issues, the survivor added. This, she said, is where the series comes in. “There is this element of the unknown, where doctors will say, ‘Your cancer is gone for now, and all we can do is watch and wait,’” said D’Acquisto. “It’s a very scary time for cancer survivors, and it brings out the whole range of emotions and questions.” The series, which debuts today at Twin Cities Community hospital, is open to all cancer survivors, their families, friends and health care professionals. Leading experts in the oncology, cardiology, psychology, radiation, dentistry and nutrition fields will lead the talks. D’Acquisto said it’s important to address the many side-effects of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and other prevalent treatments -- no matter how small. Today’s talk will cover the importance of dental health, led by Douglas NG, DDS. “This is an example of an easy way to take control of your health in a small measure that will still have a big impact,” said D’Acquisto. The talk will take place at Twin Cities Community Hospital, within Medical Arts Building. The second program in the series, slated for Thursday, March 6, will take place at the The Cancer Support Community, located in downtown Paso Robles. Attendees will gather for a discussion addressing, “Survivorship: from cancer patient to cancer survivor.” Dr. Brian DiCarlo, a board certified oncologist/hematologist at Coastal Integrative Cancer Care is slated to discuss the developments in aftercare plans, managing the lasting effects of cancer treatment, and understanding the road to wellness. D’Acquisto said a robust series is planned for this year, and she is eager to see what kind of response resonates from the public. Upcoming talks will address everything from post-traumatic stress disorder to nutrition. “As cancer care gets better, there are going to be more survivors and need for more survivorship care and education,” said D’Acquisto. “The doctors take care of you throughout treatment, providing the surgery or radiation, and then they cut you off…but that is the time when the social needs come in.” For more information on the Cancer Survivorship Series, contact The Cancer Support Community at 238-4411 to RSVP or email [email protected].
