A tribute to a legend By Elias Bourgess They say that a managers success depends on the hard work of his backroom staff especially his Assistant Managers. Throughout history managers would get all the credit for the clubs success while people forget those who worked behind the scenes to ensure that the club would attain this success. When we talk about the Busby Babes, the first person that comes to our mind is Sir Matt Busby, sure the man had a big part in making history with a group of young lads, sure that The Trinity Best, Charlton and Law were the instruments of creating that golden era. But if it wasnt for that man, Jimmy Murphy, none of that would have happened. Twenty-five years ago today, the world lost a a legendary person who should be a role model for anyone who would aspire to become a successful manager, an assistant manager or even a coach. When the 1958 Munich Disaster happened, Sir Matt Busby had a broken leg which prevented him of doing his managerial duties for a while which made Jimmy Murphy to step in as caretaker manager and work tirelessly to rebuild a team that was almost destroyed by that plane crash until Sir Matt Busby was fit enough to be able to continue his managerial duties. Together with Busby, Jimmy Murphy won 8 major trophies including Uniteds first ever European Cup in 1968. Hadnt it been for him, the Busby Babes wouldnt have existed or even Fergies Fledglings as he was the man behind the philosophy of giving young home-grown players a chance to show their talents and ability in the senior team. Today, Manchester United honours Jimmys legacy with the Jimmy Murphy centre and the Jimmy Murphy young player of the year award. Coaching history: He stayed with Manchester United from 1946 until the 1970s where he held numerous positions such as Assistant Manager, Chief Coach, Reserve Team Manager and Full-Time Scout. He is also a legend in Wales as he was the National Team Manager manager from 1956 till 1964 leading them to their first and only participation in the FIFA World Cup in 1958 in Sweden after beating Israel in Cardiff on the same night as the Red Star Belgrade versus Manchester United in Yugoslavia thus the reason of him not being on the Munich Plane. Honours as a coach: During his time at Manchester United, he had won: - 5 First Division (Premier League) titles - 2 FA Cups - 5 FA Charity Shields - 1 European Cup - 3 Central League Titles - 6 FA Youth Cups #ManUtd #MUFC #JimmyMurphy
