A very beautiful daughter of very richman in a certain community stepped outof her house to visit her aunt, who livedno more than a few streets away.Suddenly a riot erupted as she had gonehalfway and she found herself trappedwith apparently nowhere to go. Shesawa Masjid nearby and quickly went inside.Sitting in the women’s section Therioting continued late into the nightandthis girl did not know what to do. Thecustodian of the Masjid was a veryyoung student there and late at nightwhen he walked through the Masjidbefore locking up he noticed thisbeautiful young lady.He was a respectful young man whofeared Allah and so politely asked her toleave saying that if she was found therethen both would be dishonored andthrown out. She pleaded with himbecause of the extreme danger outsideand so he agreed that she could spendthe night, and sat down to study at theopposite end of the Masjid.The girl was unable to sleep with theevents of the day. In her mind and sowatched the young man sitting studyingby candle light at the opposite end ofthe Masjid. She kept watching him andwas very surprised at something shesaw. From time to time this young manwould extend his hand and keep it overthe open flame. Only withdrawing itwhen the flame obviously becameunbearable. He then would resumehisstudies and continued this throughoutThe night until the dawn broke. Theyoung men call the adhan andasked the girl to leave before thecongregation started coming to praysince now everything was calm outside.She agreed on the condition that he tellher why he was placing his hand on thecandle flame throughout the night. Theyoung man said that was his ownbusiness and so the girl refused to leaveuntil he told her what she wanted toknow.The young man gave in and said, “I amat the age youth and strong desire. Wewere alone and my desire wasincreasing, and although I was studyingthe shaytan would occasionally puttemptation in my heart. Hencewhenever I would feel any temptation Iwould put my hand on the flame andmy fingers would burn. I would saytomyself that this flame is nothingcompared to the fire of Hell.”The girl left the Masjid and reachedhome, calming her parents’ fears as towhat had happened to her. She alsoconfided in her mother that she wantedto marry custodian of the Masjid neartheir house.She related the night’s events to herparents and said that only such a manwith true fear of Allah in his heart canbe true to his wife. Only such a man whotruly fears Allah can fulfill a wife’s rightsproperly. Hence the poor custodian ofthe Masjid earned the daughter of a richhousehold in marriage.He received this honor not becauseofhis looks but because of his Character!Everything disintegrates and turns todust but character remains strong. Honoris not bestowed because of good looks,clothes or beautiful jewelery butbecause of what is in the heart.
