A very young girl, maybe 4 years old, asked me if I was pretty AND smart. I smiled, and said yes, I am. She looked deeply puzzled. She said she didnt know that could happen. My heart broke, but I smiled sweetly and said Sweetheart, Im in school to be a doctor, Im pretty, Im smart, and Im happy too (thinking, as we all know none of those are mutually exclusive). YOU can be anything you want, too. She gave me a huge hug, scooted her chair closer to mine, sat down next to me, and just breathed. Its deafening, the bugs children get placed in their innocent ears.
