A word on bedding & housing for your ferret: Pine, cedar & other - TopicsExpress

A word on bedding & housing for your ferret: Pine, cedar & other beddings release what are called aromatic hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons will cause respiratory infections & compromised liver function for ferrets. This type of bedding, combined with the notorious glass fish tank approach that most large pet shops seem to take, can be fatal and/or lead to very costly vet bills and very unhappy ferrets. Even if you get your ferret from a pet shop that houses them this way, please ditch the fish tank for a decent sized cage of at least 2x3x2 feet (this is minimum, but the bigger the better) with no bedding other than cozy fleece hammocks, and make sure that your baby has plenty of out-of-cage time to roam around and be a weasel on a daily basis. If you or anyone you know has any other questions about proper housing, please feel free to contact us! We are here to help and educate you, and we understand that even if you followed the pet stores instructions, you were simply trying to do the right thing as a new ferret keeper.
