ABOUT JOSHUA FRANCIS: Joshua Francis, LLB(hons), LEC, BA(hons), MBA. Joshua Francis is an Economist and Attorney at law in private practice. He is a graduate of the Hugh Wooding Law School, the University of the West Indies, Indian River College, University of Central Florida and the Keller Graduate School of Business. On November 27, 2013, Mr. Francis declared himself as the UWPs candidate for the Roseau South Constituency in Dominica’s upcoming general election. He declared himself as a ‘man of the people,’ Francis said that he will take it upon himself to ensure that the people of the constituency are empowered and visions what he described as “better days. He was born in Roseau and was raised by his Paternal Grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Francis (AKA Mr. & Mrs. Sixpence). As a child raised in very humble beginnings, he sold produce in the local markets and did odd jobs from a very early age to help provide for himself and his family. This economic hardship, compounded with the emotional pain of not having the direct presence of his parents in his life served as an inspiration for him to strive towards academic success. He has trumped over adversitythrough the glory and will and power of God He attended the Roseau Boys School, the Newtown Primary School and the St Luke’s Primary School before moving on to the Dominica Community High School (DCHS), between 1986 to1991. Following his high school graduation he attended the Dominica State College, formerly known as the Clifton Dupigny Community College (CDCC) where he embarked on three A’ level subjects, namely, Economics, Geography and Sociology. Upon graduation from the CDCC in 1993, he provided a month of voluntary teaching at DCHS. He then worked as a Teacher (1993-2000) at the Grand Bay Secondary School, (Pierre Charles Secondary School). In 2000, he moved overseas to further his education. Throughout his academic career he has received numerous academic awards, and also benefited from a UWI scholarship for indigenous people. Joshua is described as a ‘man of the people’, a devout Christian and is married with Dr. Hedda Dyer with whom he has two children, Henri and Annelise. Joshua finds joy in helping others and in making meaningful differences in their lives’, particularly the weak and marginalized, driven by the basic Christian values of love for one another and the spirit of hard work. His legal practice has provided him with the opportunity to provide significant pro bono legal services to the less fortunate. He also has a special place in his heart for the cause of the Kalinago people, his mother being Kalinago. Outside of his professional interests, he is an avid reader and writer. He has written a regular column for the Sun Newspaper and is a regular commentator on social issues on local radio. Joshua is keen sportsman and enjoys a game of basketball, cricket and football and most importantly, he loves spending time with his family.
