ACCOMPLISHMENT - The key to an outstanding resume. When writing experience sections, people often list their job duties & neglect to include what theyve accomplished. Accomplishments serve to give credibility to your skills & separate you from other candidates. Accomplishments also provide context around your role so employers can envision you in the position theyre looking to fill. Heres an actual example from one of my clients, a former bank teller: • Professionally assisted customers with daily financial transactions. (Sounds ok, but EVERY bank teller does this. What separates her from other tellers or general customer service reps that applied?) INSTEAD •Achieved the distinguished Five Star Customer Interaction Quality Service Rating for superior client service. (Now we clearly see that she doesnt simply provide customer service, but shes excellent at doing so.) So, what if youve never won an award at work? Can you still show accomplishment? Absolutely! Using numbers in your job descriptions is a great way to show daily accomplishment & competence. Heres another real client example: •Provided friendly cashiering services to customers at check-out. (Ok, thats the role, but we can dig deeper into that responsibility & pull out a daily accomplishment.) INSTEAD •Accurately maintained a drawer balance of $1k, cash and credit, while providing stellar service to an average of 40 customers per day. (Now, using numbers, the potential employer gets an idea of the what the candidate has actually accomplished each day in terms of managing transactions & customer volume.) Dont sell yourself short on your resume. You have accomplishments! Youve done some great work. Be sure to show it!
