AFRICA DEFINE YOURSELF: AS AFRICANS IN AFRICA AND IN DIASPORAS WE SHOULD NOT CELEBRATE ANYTHING ELSE BUT EXCELLENCE By Senzo Scholar The University of Cape Town (UCT) is hailed as the best University in Africa. UCT is ranked no 1 among South African Universities, and also ranked no 1 among all universities in the entire African continent. Sadly (to me and selected others) this is not worth celebrating. I say so, because in the world university rankings, the University of Cape Town is ranked as no 145. This simply means the best university in Africa is not even in the top 100 universities in the world. It also means that the best university in Africa is 144 times inferior with the best university in the world. Right there white supremacy and black subjugation, but hey, it is celebrated in Africa. Please Africans wake up. In addition, the Africas best university has been given an overall score of 60.5%, which does not by any standard of reasonable test, pass the excellence score. It is a common knowledge that what qualifies to be regarded as excellent is anything with a scoring from 80% to 100%. Pragmatically 60.5% is way below excellent, it is better. If Africa want to be the force to recon with and compete with the best of the best in the world, at least being among top 10, is an imperative achieve. The Africas best University has the following rankings on very critical aspect of university studies: 1. Engineering and Technology studies, the UCT is ranked 282 in the world; 2. Management studies, UCT is ranked 112 in the world; and 3. On Academic Reputation, UCT is ranked 142 in the world. Source: topuniversities/node/2252/ranking-details/world-university-rankings/2013 and topuniversities/search/site/University%2Bof%2BCape%2BTown The MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MIT) is ranked no 1, with an overall score of 100%. Even though that this doesnt make mathematical sense, given that - [Source: topuniversities/node/4179/ranking-details/world-university-rankings/2013] MIT in Engineering and Technology studies, got 96.3%, and for Management studies, MIT got a score of 87.4%. And as such one can deduct that the overall score of 100% is questionable. But still the gap between the worlds best university and Africas best is way too much 40%. This raises the following questions - 1. Is this some covert part of white supremacy and black subjugation or this is a true reflection of the actual academic performance of these academic institutions? 2. Does it make sense to celebrate 60.5% performance as the best? 3. Should the 60.5% performance be regarded as the best? 4. Isnt this tantamount to worship, and submitting to inferiority? 5. Is this the correct definition of Africas best? 6. Is this how the best in Africa should be? In my view I humbly and respectfully submit that celebrating 60.5% as the best decries mediocrity... Looking forward to your take and interesting debate thereof. Africa define yourself in a best possible way Aluta Continua!!
