AL DIAZ AND OTHER STREET ARTISTS PAY TRIBUTE THROUGH GRAFFITI TO JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN NEW ORLEANS [NOVEMBER 8 & 9, 2013] AL DIAZ AND OTHER STREET ARTISTS PAY TRIBUTE THROUGH GRAFFITI TO JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN NEW ORLEANS [NOVEMBER 8 & 9, 2013] WHAT: Internationally recognized street artists, who are rarely together, are descending on New Orleans in collaboration of a unified mission to encourage the awareness of a revolutionary art-form from their day, graffiti, and its new found place in the 21st century. On November 8 & 9, 2013, Al Diaz and others will pay tribute to the late neo-expressionist and primitive painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat, on the 25th year anniversary of his only visit to New Orleans. Basquiat and Diaz together were known under the pseudonym SAMO for their expressive spray-painted graffiti. PURPOSE: New Orleans real estate developer and hotelier Sean Cummings is spearheading the gathering of Basquiat’s colleagues and collaborators from the 80’s graffiti movement along with contemporaries who are carrying the torch for a new generation of this type of expressive art exploding in New Orleans. “Art breaks barriers between race, gender, wealth, poverty, integration, and segregation – and the Bywater neighborhood is becoming that community of one voice.” – Cummings WHEN: Friday, November 8, 2013 from 7:00PM – 10:00PM WHO: •Al Diaz | Basquiats friend and co-originator of the globally recognized signature tag SAMO. •Brandan Odums | Creator of Project Be, a graffiti-transformed housing project in NOLA expected to be demolished in 2014. •Gabriel Flores | NOLA based graphic designer and owner of TheInkWellPress - a man whose career has been influenced by Basquiat. •James Concannon | New Orleans based folk artist who has collaborated with Basquiats friend and acclaimed photographer Ricky Powell. WHAT: Three artists, using six largely unknown polaroids that Basquiat took in New Orleans in 1988 as their source material, will transform several shipping containers into the largest graffiti wall in the South to showcase social commentary in New Orleans. WHAT: International House will highlight Basquiat’s fine art career with a FREE gathering unveiling an original calligram of Basquiat by Dylan Roscover that will remain on permanent display in the lobby.
