AMERICAN PIKA I spotted this little guy while out for a early morning walk from camp on my Mt St Helens trek this last summer. Here is a brief description from Nature Works about them: The American pika has a small, round body, peppery brown fur, large round ears and no visible tail. It is between six and eight inches long and weighs about six ounces. They can be found in western North America from central British Columbia in Canada to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada, California and New Mexico. The American pika lives in rocky mountain areas and boulder-covered hillsides, usually at elevations of between 5,000-13,000 feet, between the timberline and down into subalpine forest. It makes its home in rock piles and slides. Although pikas live in groups, they are territorial and will guard and defend their own areas from other pikas. Pika are not a rodents. They are closely related to Rabbits and Hares.
