AND - WHAT OF THE ECONOMY! A question has been posed as to how come the US dollar is “going up?” In fact the dollar is not going up. It has in fact been in troubled waters, but its economy can still swim fairly well. The economic home base of the US dollar continues to have a firmer and more diversified production base and broad market field to keep it hanging up there. The risk for the Zambian Kwacha to be”going down” has been ever there! This shall continue to be the case until and unless the “Milk in a Basket” fundamental vulnerability of underdevelopment, disarticulation and dependency is overcome. The Zambian Kwachas home economy was established and has continued to have a weak, dependent and narrow PRODUCTION base, with its few export products depending on foreign driven and controlled market forces and with its many import inputs and consumer goods not covered by its earnings. It has been said many times and by many people before: We produce what we don’t consume much of but consume much of what we don’t produce and what we cannot afford from the earnings of what we produce. What is optimistically called the ruling party (ruling what, in the face of over bearing global power structures and machinations) concerned with the person of the president cannot digitize (rebase or fine tune) a way of this fundamental dilemma. And the euphemistically termed opposition (opposed to what political-economic system) grouping concerned with who is president cannot politicize a way out either. THERE CANNOT BE THE EFFECTIVE SOLUTION ANSWER UNTIL AND UNLESS THERE IS FIRST THE CORRECT PROBLEM QUESTION - beyond personal, ethnic, partisan and sectarian considerations that are at play, together with a culture of being more comfortable with weak non-assertive “yes-boy and “home-boy” personalities, exclusive mediocrity and boundless rhetoric and essentially status quo based piece meal approached to national economic management – ABOVE ALL THE ECONOMY CAN ONLY BE APPROPRIATELY TRANSFORMED AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A TRULLY NATIONAL AND INCLUSIVELY NATIONALISTIC-CUM-PAN AFRICANIST VISIONARY AGENDA. BUT THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE NOW – and has not been since Independence!
