ATTENTION PARENTS: Monroe Schools make state-required change in school year The Monroe Public Schools’ school year has been extended through at least June 18, due to state requirements following the loss of 15 days of school because of weather-related cancellations since January 1. The State of Michigan allows for six school cancellations annually which do not need to be made up but the weather has been so bad this year that Monroe Public Schools already has exceeded that by nine, including last Thursday’s cancellation. “By announcing the extended date now, we are hoping that we’ll get the word to our district families early enough that they will not plan their vacations while we still have to have school in session,” said Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Barry Martin. “We understand the required school-year extension may impact summer plans by our families and employees but we need to make these days up and maintain our regular student attendance while doing it.” Originally, the school year was to have concluded on Friday, June 6, with a half day of classes for students and records in the afternoon for teachers. However, with the school-year extension, June 6, will be a full day of classes now. To meet the 175 student days and 1,098 hours of instruction required by the State of Michigan, some other changes also will be made, Dr. Martin said. Those changes will add six full days of instruction and three half days of instruction for students to meet state regulations on hours of instruction. Those additional changes are: --Wednesday, May 21, which was to have been no school for students due to a teacher-in-service day, now will be a half-day for students. --Monday, June 9 through Monday, June 16, will be added to the schedule full days of school. --Tuesday, June 17, and Wednesday, June 18, will be added to the schedule as half days of school for the students with teacher records in the afternoon.
