AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS TURNS 100! I look forward to attending a reception at Launceston’s Town Hall this evening to acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the Australian Red Cross. The Red Cross has made an outstanding contribution to Australia, showing extraordinary dedication to our citizens during war and peace. It was founded to respond to the humanitarian needs arising from the First World War and continued to care for returned soldiers, their families and loved ones. As the Minister for Veteran’s Affairs has pointed out, the Red Cross established a Wounded and Missing Persons Information Bureau in each state and by the end of the First World War the Australian Red Cross was handling 36,000 cases, discovering the fate of missing and wounded soldiers. The Australian Red Cross ‘Our Centenary’ website centenary.redcross.org.au/ has stories about the extraordinary generosity and compassion of everyday Australians.
