AUTHOR ARCHIVES: JONASFILIPINO August 20, 2013 THE TEAM Two weeks have passed now since I had my first soccer training with my new football team in Nasugbu, Batangas. I am coaching 20 boys, aged 12-15 from four different Barangays. All of them have experienced child labour and are beneficiaries of the ERDA Foundation. Coaching them every Saturday and Sunday morning, I have realized how delightful and talented they are. I enjoy every practice with them. Accordingly, I am said that I cannot provide the most effective soccer training due to several factors. Football here does not lack popular support, yet material. My boys need equipment, they lack shoes, some are playing in slippers. We do not have enough balls, no cones, no proper goals. Usually the ‘Plaza’ is in a terrible condition. When the field in the town centre is used for public events, it is covered with garbage and when it rains, it is muddy. There are ambitions by a local soccer vanguard to make Nasugbu the number one football hub in the Philippines. Their vision is to create the FC Nasugbu in order to make football accessable to everyone, not just to those playing behind the walls of the sugar production area ‘Central’, or to the chosen beneficiaries of the ERDA Foundation. Moreover, the local organizers hope that football will allow the children to have a better life, off the streets and off the sugar cane plantations, but in college since they have the opportunity to get scholarships for their football playing. Still, it is a long way and help of any kind is needed. Considering myself, my help is focussed on spreading the sport itself, coaching and trying to extend the network of partnerships and equally looking for sponsors.
