Acceptable Excuses not to Fast During RAMADHAN: ................................................................ (l) A woman on her menses or with post-partum bleeding is required to break her fast, (2) A person who is needed to rescue another Muslim from death, such as drowning and so forth, [may break his or her fast]. (3) A traveler is permitted to shorten his prayers and it is sunnah for him to break his fast, (4) A person who fears he will be harmed by fasting may also break his fast. (5) A traveling person who returns to his home during the daytime. ................................................. (6) A pregnant or breastfeeding woman may break her fast if she fears any harm for herself alone or for both herself and her child. In those cases, she simply has to make up those days later without any kind of penalty or “ransom”(e.g. No Feeding of a poor person for each day Missed). But if the pregnant woman fears, not for herself (i.e. she was capable to fast but broke her fast because of the child) but only for her child, then she must make up the day later as well as fulfill the penalty (e.g. feed a poor person for each day missed). In either case, she must make up the days she did not fast later.
