Activities at the six campuses of the Osun State University were on Wednesday paralysed following the commencement of an indefinite strike by all the workers’ unions of the institution. The workers, under the aegis of the Joint Action Congress, declared an indefinite strike to press home their demands for the payment of their allowances. The unions participating in the strike are the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University; Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational Institutions; and the National Association of Academic Technologists. The workers staged a protest at the main campus of the university located in Osogbo, the state capital. The workers accused the state government of insensitivity for not paying their entitlements. The NASU Chairman, Mr. Isaiah Fayemi, who addressed members of the three unions at the congress held after the peaceful protest, said the management of the university had met with the state government on behalf of the workers but their efforts had not yielded positive result. In the communiqué issued by the chairmen of SSANU, Mr. Kadiri Adiat; NASU, Isaiah Fayemi; and NAAT, Mr. Adeleke Ismaheel, the workers insisted that government must meet their demands. “The University should henceforth stop the implementation of the new killing tax regime and reverse to the old tax as obtained in other universities,” the communique read in part.
