Adjuncts at institutions in the Boston area make about 5,000 per course. Assume that the course meets 3 hours per week and that they spend two hours of preparation for each hour of class (less if they teach the same course regularly, more if it is a new course). This is 9 hours per week (not counting commute, so add three more hours for that, 12 hours per week). A course will last 15 weeks, lets say. This is a total of 180 hours. That works out to about $28.00 per hour. At most institutions an adjunct may personally pay for participation in the health plan. This would cost them about 5,000 per year, or about one course. So assume that an adjunct teaches ten courses per year plus one in the summer to pay for benefits. That is a gross pay of 55,000 per year. Not bad. There are a lot of people who would like to have such a job. On the other hand, it is not as much as tenured/tenure-track faculty make. So the adjunct has a choice. Accept reasonable pay that is not what they hoped to make going to graduate school, or go into another line of work before too much time passes. Tough gamble. But still better than many Americans have it.
