After Muslims, CPM to woo Christian settlers in Malabar...... KANNUR: After the Muslims in Malabar, the CPM in Malabar is shifting focus to the Christian settlers in the hilly areas of the region in an effort to woo them, even as they are known for their anti-communist stance. As part of this exercise, the CPM is planning to organise a series of seminars on Malabar migration - history and development, under the aegis of Patyam Gopalan Memorial Study and Research Centre, a cultural organization controlled by the party. This was announced on Monday by CPM district secretary P Jayarajan in his presidential address at the releasing function of the second volume of History of Communist Party in Kannur District, by CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. A majority of the five lakh people from Central Tranvancore who migrated to Malabar were anti-communists, mainly because of the propaganda against communism by the Catholic Church. However, the Communist party managed to make inroads into that community thanks to the influence of the leaders like Fr Vadakkan and Lonappan Nambadan, said Jayarajan. Published by Patyam Gopalan Memorial Study and Research Centre, the book has also devoted a chapter to the settlers from Travancore in the district. It was on October 3 that the CPM had organized a seminar, Muslims in Malabar and the Left Movement, with the support of 18 pro-CPM Muslim cultural organizations in the district. The move on the part of the CPM is seen as a major move on its part in the run-up to the next election, as the party is accused of taking a soft Hindutva stance in the Malabar region, especially Kannur district.TOI
