After caterpillars pupate, the chrysalises/pupae are taken to - TopicsExpress

After caterpillars pupate, the chrysalises/pupae are taken to another lab. In that lab, breeder pupae (the ones we keep to produce more eggs) are disinfected and taken to the breeder popup room and emerged in that room. The others are sorted and some are placed in popups to emerge. Some are glued, others do not need to be glued. Many are shipped to exhibits. Those that go to exhibits are placed in a 54 degree cooler to delay emerging. In our 76-80 degree rooms, theyd emerge quickly, too quickly to be able to ship to exhibits. Nature has taught butterfly farmers how to speed up and delay emerging times. We copy nature by slowing them with cooler temperatures. Like cool spring or fall weather, the cooler delays emerging so we can ship them without fear of them emerging during transit. We ship pupae to 30 exhibits in the US.
