After narrowly losing to high-flying Riverside Rovers last week Rapid took on fellow strugglers Vale Longo at Recreation Road. Rapid knew this game was something of a “must win” to avoid being cut adrift from the sides in mid-table. Gardner replaced the absent Rowe in goal in what was otherwise an unchanged side: Gardner Rudd Martin Youngs Taylor Parke Orr Kobylecki Kingsbury Jones Weavers Subs: Good, Rudder Rapid made a good start to the game and were on top for the first 20 minutes. The football wasn’t always the best on the heavy pitch but they tried to employ the high pressing game they’d used against Riverside Rovers. Chances were created which could and should have seen Rapid take the lead but instead the visitors found some momentum towards the end of the half and they could well have put themselves ahead, had it not been for some resilient goalkeeping from Gardner. Nil-nil at half time and the opportunity was taken to shuffle the pack a little. Jones switched to the right wing with Rudder taking the left flank after replacing Parke. Good came on for Rudd in a straight swap at right back. Not long after the restart some determined work from Kingsbury high on the left wing saw him whip a dangerous cross into the box which Weavers headed in from close range for the opening goal. An excellent start to the half for Rapid and one they wanted to build upon. The away side tried to get themselves back on terms but they were often left to resort to long ball tactics as they sought to put Rapid under pressure. However, Rapid were defending with great determination and this gave them a good platform to use when going forward. When Kingsbury headed in at the near post from a Rudder corner the home side had the cushion they had very much needed. This left Vale Longo with little choice but to commit numbers forward in search of a way back into the game and while Rapid had to work hard to resist the pressure it also presented them with an opportunity to counter attack. Kingsbury killed the game off after he and Weavers pressed the opposing defence into a mistake leaving the Rapid player to coolly curl a shot out of reach of the goalkeeper and into the top corner. A vital and fully deserved 3 points for Rapid as they look to climb the table and maintain their status as a Division 1A side.
