Akhet-Aten The horizon of Aten is a vast crescent-shaped plain - TopicsExpress

Akhet-Aten The horizon of Aten is a vast crescent-shaped plain of 4 kilometers long and 800 meter broad, that was chosen by Pharaoh Aknaten (c.1375 -1350 BC) to be his capital and new cult center. it lies on the eastern bank of the river near modern Deir Mawas city about 280 Km south of Cairo. it was a site that had no cult activity before, that is to say there was no earlier settlement or existing priesthood. Unlike all cities in ancient Egypt, Akhet -Aten was not built in the fertile valley, but was built in the barren plain there, facing the agricultural land lay on the western bank. The city had no enclosure wall so that it satisfied the cult of worshiping the solar desk in open space, yet it is evident from tomb reliefs that there were detachment of troops guarded the royal family and undoubtedly patrolled the desert slopes. the three main streets of the city ran parallel to the river, while the main residential area and the site of the temple of Aten once lie on the area spread southwards between the modern village el-Till and el-Hag Kandil. to the north south was the habitations of the high officials and priests. elshamstravel magicalegypt.wordpress/2014/06/27/program-9-11-nights-12-days-cairo-hurgada-and-nile-cruise/
