Al-Laham urges developing countries to join efforts for strengthening national sovereignty 16/10/2014 Geneva, SANA-Speaker of the People’s Assembly Mohammad Jihad al-Laham discussed with a delegation from the Senate of Uruguay, led by Luis Gallo, parliamentary relations between Syria and Uruguay, and means of their promotion amid Western attempts to control the region and the South American continent. The meeting came on the margins of the 131st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly currently held in Geneva. Al-Laham stressed during the meeting the importance that developing countries join efforts to strengthen their sovereignty, build their capacity and defend their nations and independent decision, hailing the role of South American countries in reining in the US unilateralism policy. Regional situation and cross-border terrorism were on the agenda, with the two sides emphasizing that this phenomenon requires an overarching strategy that brings all countries on board. The views of the two sides matched about the necessity of confronting takfiri thought and setting internal house in order through dialogue, as well as drying out the sources of terrorism. Meanwhile, al-Laham took part in electing a new president of the IPU. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, from Bangladesh, was elected to the post, succeeding former president Abdelwahad Radi. On a different note, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights considered, during the IPU Assembly meeting, the assassination of MP Waris al-Younes a violation of the Committee’s principles. Terrorists opened fire on al-Younes’ car near Um al-Twaikiye crossroads on Tuesday midnight while he was heading from Hama city to al-Salamiya.
