Alhaji Mohammadu Gambo- Jameta John Shiklam The chairman of the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Northern Elders Council (NEC) and former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammadu Gambo- Jameta, yesterday declared that President Goodluck Jonathan has the capacity to address the problems facing the country. Speaking shortly after the inauguration of the BoT at the Arewa House, Kaduna, Gambo- Jameta noted that Jonathan has managed the complex challenges facing the country with firmness and effectiveness, stressing that the President will overcome the turbulent waters of insurgency and underdevelopment facing the country. He also commended the President for the harmonious working relationship with his deputy, Namadi Sambo, saying that their working relationship “is the demonstration of leadership by example in our quest to promote peaceful coexistence among people of different religion, ethnic and regional backgrounds.” The former IG who spoke on behalf of other members of the BoT noted that one of the critical elements of the NEC’s mission statement is commitment to peace, progress and unity of Nigeria, adding that members of the BoT share and endorsed the commitment without reservation. “Many of us have spent most of our lives in the service of this great country and we can say with boldness and a clear sense of responsibility that we owe it to our children’s children to make this country more stable, more united and more prosperous than ever before. “We are aware of the many challenges facing the nation, including the problem of poverty, ethnicity, poor infrastructure, alienation and other social malaise. “In the last three years, in particular, our country has had to contend with insurgency and terrorism in some parts of the north. We cannot pretend that things are rosy in our country today, but we also know that the situation is by no means insurmountable. “The good news is that in the midst of all these challenges, our country has remained resilient and successfully held together. “We recognise the efforts of the federal government under the able leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan in managing the complex challenges with firmness and effectiveness. “We are convinced that such efforts can take this country out of the turbulent waters of insurgency and underdevelopment,” Gambo-Jameta said. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of NEC, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, reiterated that the council aims at providing a platform for proactive and constructive engagement in the economic and socio-political spheres of the north and Nigeria in general. He added that members of the BoT were distinguished and eminent Nigerians from all walks of life who have laboured for the unity, peace, harmony and progress of the country. Some members of the BoT include former Major-General Zamani Lekwot (rtd), former governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, Col. Habibu Shuaibu (rtd), former governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Aliyu Akwe Doma, former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, Prof. Monday Mwangvwat, Dr. Garba Nadama, and Dr. Shettima Mustapha. Others are former minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Haliru, former minister of information, Prof. Jerry Gana, Hon. Atoza Ihidan, Dr. Hassan Adamu, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, Amb. Sulaiman Zubairu and Mallam Adamu Waziri among others.
