Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory — how one iPod can make a world of difference If youve got an iPod that youre not using you can mail it in to them and they will even pay for the postage. Music & Memory is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, improving quality of life. Music & Memory brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly and infirm through digital music technology, often improving quality of life. Throughout the spectrum of health and age, music has produced extraordinary therapeutic benefits. Dr. Oliver Sacks, noted neuroscientist and author, affirms that music brings back the feeling of life when nothing else can. Perhaps you know someone living at home or in a long-term care community, who has Alzheimer’s disease, is depressed, or has some sort of debilitating condition. Try setting them up with their favorite music. Hundreds of studies have documented the positive impact of individualized music on depression, anxiety, agitation, pain, and insomnia. Dr. Oliver Sacks affirms that “music can animate people with Parkinsons disease who cannot otherwise move, give words to stroke residents who cannot otherwise speak, and calm and organize people whose memories are ravaged by Alzheimers or amnesia.” Nursing homes and assisted-living facilities are moving from age-appropriate to person-specific music to further improve therapeutic outcomes and quality of life. This approach is especially useful for persons with Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia. We train nursing home staff and other elder care professionals, as well as family caregivers, how to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods and related digital audio systems that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. By providing access and education, and by creating a network of certified Music & Memory elder care facilities, we aim to make this form of personalized music therapy a standard of care throughout the health care industry.
