Last saturday July 12, 2014 the East L. a. music community got together to celebrate Sounds of Musics 50th anniversary, now being one of, if not- oldest surviving brick and mortar record stores in the West Coast. Sounds of Music has been a landmark on Whittier Boulevard since 1964. It was great to see so many old timers getting together to celebrate something. The afternoon was kept going by Lil Ray Jimenez and his band, he invited guests throughout the program. About Sounds of Music, some people might say that their prices are steep, but here is the thing: it costs a lot of money to physically stock CDs and vinyl. Plus this record store is one place that you can count on to find a rare Chicano release. You can find stuff online, but the postage evens it up. So it is worth spending a morning or afternoon going through the bins. Too bad age and health caught up with me and did not stay till the end. But still it was fantastic seeing so many old friends. Everyone has a significant and important story to tell. (If you are into conspiracy theories, Facebook is not a safe place. All that science fiction stuff like face recognition, well Facebook knows your face. As I was uploading the pictures the system knew who you were.) (One last rant. There is always one or two people at an event like this who hits you up with a book or movie deal. Oh well this is Hollywood. The problem is that there is no money up front. Thats why I rather share my images with the gente.)
