Although heavy thunderstorms in the Eastern Sierra mountains to the west of Manzanar National Historic Site caused considerable and very significant flood damage overnight on July 22-23, 2013, Manzanar did not suffer major, permanent damage. That said, virtually all of the rehabilitation work at the various gardens, including the iconic Merritt Park, has been undone by the flood waters, covering much of the gardens and filling the ponds with silt.
