Am I wrong to think that we really have to be careful deciding - TopicsExpress

Am I wrong to think that we really have to be careful deciding what to do in Sochi? Really focus on what would help the gays who live in Russia? Is it just me who feel like all I read is what we, the north Americans and europeans, want to do rather than what the gays in Russia want us to do? Just was thinking. Not to say this is my opinion, but just one of the thoughts. Depending on the true motivations of these laws, Going to Sochi and doing everything in shades of rainbow to showcase support could make the situation worse for gays who live there if it is based in the fear of unknown? The gays could all be like Oh, Cmon, guys. Weve been trying to convince others that we are like everyone else, and you come and be all pride parade on us! What if we all just be like we always are except for a subtle symbol like a pin, which makes us pretty much indistinguishable from straights unless youre Johnny Weir, showing them that there is nothing to be scared about? Thats more powerful if it is the fear of unknown. (just as an example of perspective as in this specific case that might be ineffective because the Russians will just think their pressure worked, instead of learning thats how we are like every day.) Besides. North wind and the sun says we dont know Russia to ever do something that make them *appear* to succumb to international pressure. I just dont know what is the best thing we can do for the gays who have to live there in March after we have gone home. What is the support that they want from us? Anyone read anything?
