Amanda Pacheco asked, I have a 2nd grader who seems to have good phonics and decoding skills, but is only able to read well when there are not too many words on a page and when the text is large enough. She received 6 months of visual therapy in kindergarten from a reputable provider and made good progress. In the Step-Into Reading books, she is now comfortably in Level 2, enjoys reading picture books from the library, and comprehends well. However, she still has not made the leap into chapter books such as Magic Treehouse, despite loving the stories being read to her. My gut tells me that reading something like that is still a wee bit difficult for her and she loves the stories so much that shed rather have me read them so she can focus on enjoying the story. My question then is.... how can I help her improve fluency and skill, so that tackling more complicated books becomes something she wants to do? We havent done a formal reading curriculum since we finished Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (in the beginning of first grade, I think). but she reads books of her own choosing every day for at least 15 minutes. Thank you!
