Among the giant flock of Canada Geese that was hanging out on Yates Mill Pond two days ago, we spied this pair of Northern Shovelers (Anas clypeata). They were seen again yesterday morning. Keep your eyes open for them. It would be hard to miss their large spoon-shaped bills which is a shape thats unique among North American waterfowl, although without looking closely you might think theyre Mallard Ducks. Their bills, which are about 2.5 in length, have comb-like projections along the edges which filter out food from the water.
