An AWESOME must watch video story, worth 12 minutes of your time. Sadly something like this is probably not going to be watched in many of today classrooms, nor the story truthfully be told as it was when I was in school. Even then I quite possibly didnt fully understand what the words stood for. Then shortly after I joined the Air Force, all decked out in my dress blues uniform I marched with the rest of my flight to our first retreat ceremony. In basic training you are always being educated on one subject or another. As part of the ceremony there was a short dissertation on the meaning of Reveille and Retreat, flag etiquette and the meaning of the National Anthem. Something happened that day... I fully understood what that flag stood for in a way that was much deeper than what words could explain; something inside of me changed forever. As Taps began playing and the flag began to be lowered a huge lump grew in my throat and my eyes began to water (surprising this 19 y/o, 60s era fledgling hippie). It was something personal and I could only hope that somehow our children can be given the opportunity to experience the same by honestly learning what this country was founded upon and how Old Glory stands for it.
