An epilogue and a prologue: As some of you know, I found a nearly dead calico cat/ kitten in our garage Monday evening. I took her to the vets office right before closing. The staff no doubt stayed late to do what they could for her. The epilogue to that story, and prologue to a new one: When I found her, all I hoped was that I could find a peaceful end to her short life. When I got to the clinic and she was still alive, I tried to stuff back hopes that she might make it, knowing I would just be bummed when she didnt. The techs and Dr. Beth Kissack were less impressed with her challenges, and popped her onto a heating pad and started subcutaneous fluids. I left thinking, well, maybe. By the time I got home I was feeling pretty optimistic, but still tried to detach myself from the whole thing, reminding myself that I did what I could. In the morning, my daily walk took on a neighborhood canvassing purpose. I talked to, and met for the first time, many wonderful people. I left notes where no one was home. I found the neighborhood watchperson, the one who knows everything about everyone. She put more wheels in motion than I could ever have. In the end, a friend noted that she showed up on the last day of the month (her first appearance was Friday, but I thought she left over the weekend). Despite her $50 collar, its pretty likely she got dumped. Jay and I stopped in yesterday to check on her. Apparently a few neighbors had, also. She has been eating ravenously and has won over the staff. Dr. Kissack called me last night and we talked for a bit. She needs spayed and vaccinated, and tested for any of the baddies we dont want brought into our home with two resident felines. Once it appeared that she was going to make it, I just wanted her to find her way home. Provided that her tests are negative, it appears that she has done just that. Grace willing, Jay and I are going to pick her up when we take Rupert for his vax appointment this morning.
