An open letter to Sean Hannity, inspired by the photo below. Written in a haste, from a place of emotion. With that warning, Id say: Looking for eloquence and verbal precision? Might find it elsewhere (sorry). Looking for passion and honesty? Welcome. Dear Sean, The inscription on the Statue of Liberty does not include terms and conditions. There is no asterisk with fine print. There is only the words of welcome to those in need. Further, there is this passage from Leviticus 19:33-34: When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. As one of the engineers and rabble-rousers of the glob of hate and ignorance that is the Tea Party, you claim a deep, abiding love for America and God. So why am I -- a so-called godless, America-hating liberal -- more adherent to both the Spirit of America and Biblical teachings than you are? (Not just in the issue of immigration--pretty across-the-board, actually.) The truth is this: Youd despise the Founders as theyd despise you. And Jesus? Youd disparage him relentlessly. With that omnipresent smirk of yours, youd dismiss him as a liberal -- liberal being the ultimate epithet. (As your Fox colleague Bill OReilly would label him a pinhead.) I see you standing there with your machine gun, suggesting youre prepared to shoot families risking everything for a better life. Families who arrive here and often labor in a way that natural-born citizens cant imagine. They pick strawberries under a grueling sun for a few dollar a day. They bus tables, scrub toilets, move furniture. Theyre not taking your jobs. Theyre trying to survive. You are no better than the citizens who -- in the name of defending American values -- spat on the kids who dared to attend a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. Same hate, different decade. Its part of the human condition, spanning race, creed, and generation. We look back at times in our human history and wonder how it was possible. How did man create so much suffering for his fellow man? That is exactly how well regard you and your fellow Tea Party demagogues one day. You are the villains in the text books of the future. Future generations will look back at you and your fellows and ask why no one stood up to you. Those of us still alive, wrinkled and decrepit, will shrug and answer: Well, thats complicated..... And theyll hem and haw a bit, searching for a reason, for words. And then theyll just say: I guess people were too busy trying to survive to put up a good fight. Id sign this letter Respectfully but Im far too honest for that. With no respect whatsoever, Cindi, Kicking Ass for the MIddle Class
