An up-and-coming Tampa rapper’s song is about to fill the ears of millions of Robert De Niro-watching moviegoers — again. Prophit (real name Reginald M. Wilks) has scored a spot on the soundtrack for “The Family,” the upcoming film starring De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer as parents in a mobbed-up family starting over in witness protection. The movie opens in theaters Friday. But, you might have already heard Prophit’s song “This My Club” when it was on the soundtrack for the 2011 thriller “Limitless,” in which De Niro played a villain opposite Bradley Cooper. “It’s a coincidence. I don’t have a relationship with Robert De Niro or anything, but I’m a big fan of his acting, so that makes it even more of a blessing,” said Prophit, 23, who grew up in an East Tampa neighborhood near Hillsborough Avenue and 40th Street, and still lives in the Tampa area. “This My Club,” an aggressive, high-energy party anthem about the joys of a familiar nightclub, gets played for close to a full minute during “The Family,” and will appear on the official soundtrack alongside songs by The Gorillaz and Tony Bennett when it’s released Oct. 14. “It’s definitely not about any particular club,” Prophit said, when asked if the song perhaps referred to a wild night in Ybor City. “The concept is just that freedom you feel when you go in and the bouncers aren’t bugging you, the DJ supports you and he’s playing your music, and you know everybody and everybody knows you. It’s that freedom that respect brings.” In October, Prophit will be the first Tampa artist to play the five-day A3C hip-hop festival in Atlanta, where he’ll be headlining the ReverbNation showcase.
