And in other news... a. The PAP is really hitting the WP on its foreign worker zero-growth policy. It has a letter today more or less telling off an ST commentator for saying that WP is small now and dont have resources but will/may later have to uphold standards when it gets bigger. PAP riposte, via MNDs Desmond Lee,is whether big or small, issue is whether party is honest. The very silent Chen Show Mao also spoke up yesterday and got quizzed on the partys stand. He had pauses in between when answering, reported ST. He should just say: Look at me! Im an immigrant. I cant be anti-immigrant. But it must be GOOD immigrant, TALENTED immigrant. Like me! Dammit. Wheres the video? b. So 45 arts groups said no to self-licensing scheme coz they think MDA shud do its job and not get groups to self-censor with a classification scheme thats fuzzy. Now, public consultation is CLOSED I gather. So why is G response that we will carefully review feedback during the public consultation process? The scheme supposed to start with pilot run in July. Which arts group gonna be in the pilot since so many of its peers think it should be ditched? c. This ding dong on when accused should get access to lawyer... Court reiterates that it must be within reasonable time. But what is reasonable time not spelt out. Guess it must be always for lawyer to make complaint and police to justify. What I liked: State said question is moot cos in this case, the James Raj case, he already saw his lawyer. Court said this kind of argument is patently ill-conceived. This point was in TODAY, not ST. I so agree. Next time you think you might have done something wrong, quickly correct before it goes to court, and say argument is moot. AFTERNOTE: My report didnt get it right. The argument was actually even worse From judgment: The essential contention was that since the Applicant was asserting an “immediate” right to counsel and since by the time the application was brought, the Applicant had already been in remand for more than a week without access to counsel, the application was moot because he would not on any basis be able to have immediate access, that moment having already passed. - in other words, why you talking about immediate? Already in jail one week liao. d. Theres a weird report in ST Parliament pages, right at the bottom of its last page. On two foreigners who wrote in to the G, including one to LKY, about how they appreciate Spore. PM mentioned this in his speech on Wednesday and read out portions. But seems no one in MSM picked it up at the time.....Now ST running it, under headline They came, they saw, they loved Singapore. Hmmm....looked like someone told ST it missed important political point....and hence, this delayed action..
