“And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.” Joshua 9:14 God has a perfect will for each of His children (Romans 12:2). He reveals His will to us as we read the Bible and pray. The Holy Spirit guides us through the insight we receive from God’s Word. For every decision we make, there is a personal promise waiting for us in Scripture. Sometimes, what God tells us to do may not “make sense” in human terms. But we must “not lean on our own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). We must trust God’s promises and walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). When we walk by what we “think” is best, we become easy targets for Satan’s arrow of deceit. God commanded the people of Israel to kill all the inhabitants of the land of Canaan. They were not to make a peace treaty with any of them because the Canaanites were so wicked. Even the smallest group of them would corrupt God’s people with sin. A group of Canaanites known as the Gibeonites devised deceitful plan to trick Israel. They came to Joshua, Israel’s leader, and acted as though they had traveled on a long journey from a distant country outside of Canaan. They had torn wineskins, stale food, and tattered clothes as part of their disguise. They lied to Israel about their identity. Joshua and his fellow followers looked at the “evidence” alone without consulting with the Lord for guidance and made a peace treaty only to discover that the “foreigners” were Canaanites! The Gibeonites proved to be a perpetual thorn in Israel’s side. Before you make any decision, consult with the Lord first. Ask Him to give you a promise from His Word, the Bible. Never make a hasty decision based on outward appearances alone. Wait on God, walk by faith, and listen for the counsel of the Lord.
