Angela Mollard writes “the only way to get a body you like, Ive discovered, is to first like yourself.” It’s a great article, but begs the question - But how do you like yourself when your self esteem is at an all time low, and what comes 1st anyway ? Research at Better Health Channel suggests 1. regular exercise may be effective in preventing depression and also in treating mild depression. 2. A sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of depression, and depression increases the likelihood of a sedentary lifestyle. 3. Regular exercise alters brain chemistry and leads to improved mood and feelings of wellbeing. 4. People who suffer from anxiety also improve when they exercise regularly. Also according to Dr Lesley Russell, Research Associate at the Menzies Centre for Health Policy, University of Sydney, “There is a fundamental link between our minds health and our bodys health. People living with a mental illness are at greater risk of experiencing a wide range of physical health problems. The reverse relationship is also true: people living with chronic physical health conditions such as diabetes, asthma and heart conditions experience depression and anxiety at twice the rate of the general population. ” It’s a complex issue. But one thing’s for sure. It’s time that the health-care system abolished the artificial division between mental and physical health and treated the whole patient.
