Another anniversary: A boat arrival 40 years ago today. Extract from my story - paddytiberpeterancestry.wordpress/peters-story/ ‘At the very moment war was breaking out in the Middle East (Saturday, 6thOctober 1973), I was disembarking onto the dock at Fremantle from the ship the Eastern Queen that had sailed from Singapore to Australia. As I went through Passport Control, I was informed by Australian Immigration Officers that while I was on board ship from Singapore, the Whitlam Government had changed its legislation requiring holders of South African passports to have visas to come into Australia. After a brief consultation with another Officer, my passport was stamped ‘permanent resident’. I was the last person with a South African passport to be granted permanent residence under the old laws. Later that afternoon I arrived in Adelaide after a flight from Perth with a backpack and $300.00 in my wallet.’
