Another article on the benefits of riparian fencing and planting. Fencing and planting wont address issues of rising nitrogen levels in our rivers. Impacts of water extraction on river flows/ river health are not easily solved either. Tax/rate payers currently subsidise irrigators/farmers in both building irrigation schemes and in cleaning up waterways. It is easy to fence and plant, creating the impression of environmental protection and improvement. This is an illusion however as intensification of agriculture and dairy conversions continue. Wairarapa is the next community to face these issues with the Greater Wellington Regional Council promoting and resourcing irrigation of the Wairarapa Valley. This will be achieved by building five large dams That the Public Works Act is used and homes flooded for the economic benefit of those irrigating is another hidden cost to local communities. The solution is not as simple as this article proposes.
