Another social organization that I was lead into was religion, which almost became the death of me. My moms parents were in the Dutch Reform Church. They adhered to strict doctrine. One time I said jeee in front of Grandpa and he lectured me that that was taking the lords name in vane because it was short for jesus. Well anyway, in our small town or 500 there were 3 churches: Lutheran, Catholic, and Methodist. So mom chose Methodist for us. Dad didnt seem to much care. So we kids were taken to Sunday School every Sunday morning. From that indoctrination I was severely damaged; introduced to if youre bad youre destined to this hell place. NOT GOOD! But... Back to school: So here I was a kid full of life excited to get up in the morning and play in the peaceful morning dew stained grass, when this rush was on to get ready for the bus. We lived 3 miles out from town and to be picked up and hauled in. One of my best memories was of being all ready and going out and checking out the yard. In early spring when the flowers bloomed was the best. Have you ever witnessed an expansive area all in yellow dandelions? We had that. AMAZING! Then next to it, on the path to the mail box, was these gigantic lilac bushes. I would burry my face in the blooms and suck of the fragrance till I became them. Now when I smell lilac it ALWAYS takes me to that refreshing moment - back then free, present, alive, one with nature. The bus comes and ends all that... :( I felt imprisoned staring out the widow of the bus trying to find the first robin of spring, or see a flock of geese flying north. I felt the unspoken words that I was to do what I was told all day till Iwas released back on the ground at home. At that point I raced to change into my work cloths and bolt to the garden. My solace, my love!
