Another song with a story behind it... This wasnt originally done as a duet by the artists. A radio DJ, going through a divorce, was consoling himself in music when he realized that both artists had recorded their version of the song in the same key. He spliced the two songs together as a gift to his ex-wife, and word got out about the song. The buzz spread until the story was featured on the national morning shows (remember, this is 1978 - years before the internet and social media) and the public began requesting it from their local radio stations. Radio station in turn began asking for it from distributors, and the demand grew. The record studio (Columbia, I think, but dont quote me there) pitched the idea to Streisand and Diamond and got them into the studio to record the song as a duet. The song stormed its way to number one in a couple of months and the rest is history. The video below is recognized as the best live version and comes from their performance on the 1980 Grammy Awards. The rumor is they werent supposed to move during the song, only stay on their marks and sing to the cameras. This is supposedly why the camera is off pace and out of focus at times tyring to follow their impromptu performance.
