Are there any artists out there that you never cared much for on record, but who really impressed you in a live context? Gerald Albright hit me that way some time ago. I never cared for the glossy, overproduced sheen of his albums, and it tainted my perception of his abilities as a player. But once I heard him live in front of an all-acoustic rhythm section, without all the spit and polish and reverb, he struck me as a man who can damn well play some saxophone. Same with Yellowjackets; although I always liked their particular brand of electrified jazz more than most of their contemporaries, Russ Ferrantes acoustic piano chops on the un-glossed Mint Jam totally transformed my perception of the band.
