Argonese Castle sits on a small island (or islet) of volcanic rock - TopicsExpress

Argonese Castle sits on a small island (or islet) of volcanic rock linked to the mainland of Ischia, Italy, by a stone bridge built in 1441 by Alfonso V of Aragon. The bridge leads to a tunnel which rises up out on to the top of the island (there is now a lift for modern tourists). The fortifications were built to defend the island’s inhabitants from pirates around the same time the stone bridge was constructed. The existing castle was built in 474BC by Hiero I of Syracuse but fortresses had existed previously and the islet was once taken by the Romans in 326 BC for a short time before it was reclaimed by the inhabitants of Naples.
