As a public figure I try to use my voice as a tool for peace. In light of yesterdays post about the tragedy that happened in Paris, Id like to address those who misinterpreted what my post was about. I do not watch the news and sadly I cant escape it (Thanks Facebook), but when I do see stories, they are usually hate-crimes. The headlines are usually ____ was killed because he was gay or ____ was killed because he was black or ___was killed because he was a cop or _____ was killed because he was [insert religion here]. We basically live in a world where people think it is ok to kill others because of their differences and thats not ok. Yes this publication was controversial, yes they made fun of different religions, It still does not give anyone the right to take a life (or 12 in this case). Period. And yes, I do believe that if you think it is ok to take a life of another person over something this petty, you should certainly just start with yourself because one less psycho murderer means innocent lives are spared, doesnt it? However, the same way we can not generalize an entire race/culture/religion for the senseless acts of extremists is the same way we cannot generalize Muslims for this attack that happened in Paris. I was in no way doing so in my post yesterday. My post is addressed to every type of extremist who has the audacity to believe that his beliefs have to be obeyed or the result is death. None of us have the right to forcefully push our beliefs onto others, none of us have all the answers, and none of us have a right to play God. I really hoped that 2015 would be better. That somehow people would be enlightened to be the change they want to see after last year because they are just as tired of hearing bad news. The only way we can change the course of these tragedies is by loving and accepting others even if they dont look like you, dress like you, have the same beliefs as you, and etc. We are all different, yes, but that only means we are all unique. I see humans, but I dont see humanitarianism. Lets be that change.
