As many of you are aware, it’s finally that time of year again—Midwest Horse Fair is only a week away! We’re very excited and we hope the weather decides to cooperate. However, there’s something that we need to make everyone at Liberty aware of. There have been recent outbreaks of a virus called Equine Herpesvirus-1, more commonly known as EHV-1, in several parts of Minnesota and in an area of Wisconsin. Another case was just confirmed in Iowa. The symptoms of EHV-1 can range from a fever and cough to neurological dysfunction. Unfortunately, several horses in Minnesota and Wisconsin have recently had to be euthanized after testing positive for the disease. After speaking with our vet and in an effort to keep our horses safe, we have made the decision to shut Liberty Stables down for the duration of Midwest Horse Fair (Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 13). This condition applies to everyone at Liberty Stables, including horse owners, and no exceptions will be made. All lessons and activities will be cancelled. We have a great number of people who go back and forth from the fair (where horses come from all over the world) to the barn over the course of the weekend, and we can’t risk germs being transmitted. This means that if you attend Midwest Horse Fair, you may not come to Liberty Stables until Monday, April 14. In addition, any clothing worn at the horse fair must be thoroughly disinfected before being worn again to the barn. This includes boots, which must be sprayed with Lysol after being worn at the horse fair. We apologize for any inconvenience these precautions may cause, but we can’t put our horses at risk and we’d much rather be safe than sorry. We hope everyone who decides to attend the fair has a blast and we thank you for your understanding. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact Mandy at (608) 516-5594.
