As many of you know, AireNet regularly receives enquiries from members of the public about adopting an Airedale. Often these are from people who have had an Airedale previously and want another, or perhaps have one now and want a companion. We always give preference to Airedale-experienced homes, for obvious reasons, and if we already know the person or family, or they come with recommendations from AireNetters who know them personally, thats a great starting point. However, there are numerous applications from others who like the Teddy Bear look, or the ones who say Ive always wanted one. Part of our screening process is to conduct a Home Visit to applicants wherever possible, and most particularly if they dont have any links with any of our AireNetters. One such recent example highlights just exactly why the Home Visit is crucial. We received an Application that in almost all ways ticked every box. The only one that wasnt ticked was that the applicant had had dogs previously but not an Airedale .. though had always wanted one. The husband had filled in the forms, but assured us that his wife was equally keen. We arranged the Home Visit at a time when both were to be present. One of our stipulations is that all members of the immediate family must be equally desirous of adopting an Airedale. If it is only one person in a couple or family, then no deal. So it was somewhat astonishing upon arrival to discover that the wife knew nothing of the reason for the meeting and visit, and was clearly dismayed that her husband (who she then revealed has serious back problems) had indulged his fantasy to such a degree that he had convinced himself that all would be well. Needless to say, this is a home that wont be adopting an Airedale through AireNet Australia, and probably not at all anyway. We can only guess at the conversation between them that would have followed the visit. It does however illustrate precisely why you can never take things at face value, and that due diligence applies in each and every case.
