As personalized medicine becomes more and more integral to healthcare, neuroendocrine tumor patients may have a unique opportunity. Columbia University Medical researchers in New York City are developing a new approach to clinical trials, designing and testing therapies on one patient at a time. Dr. Andrea Califano and his colleagues are currently testing this individualized approach to cancer in a handful of patients with gastric and neuroendocrine tumors. Based on what they have learned from these "N-of-1" (N being the number of patients in a study) studies, they are designing a new clinical trial protocol to study an estimated 30–40 patients with pancreatic, gastric, neuroendocrine, and other tumors that have not responded to conventional therapy.
