As the Island Turns. Monday - Week one Today arrived with great anticipation. The crew was all ready to go and excitement filled the air as we ate breakfast and prepared our lunches. At 8am the truck arrived. Yes, truck. An empty one to be loaded with all the parts of the house needed for construction. And, as the first large pieces were delicately placed in the truck and photos were taken, the clouds opened up with a gentle rain. Of course. The truck got loaded anyway, then left to deliver (and yes, that means it then needed to be unloaded) the goods to our first house site. Don went with the loaded truck to help the house crew unload, followed by a trip to Bernard’s house to pick up newly built tables and chairs, and bunkbeds. These of course will need to be painted before delivery. Alan, Reggie, Jon, St Omer and Marty were today’s building crew. After a brief discussion to determine ‘Who’s the Boss’, the floor and four walls were erected. A good day in Baboneau! Mary S, Mary M and Judy spent the morning at the Marian Home taking good care of feet and spending time visiting. The ladies who reside there were so grateful to have the company, and the staff was equally appreciative that the task was off their plates. In the afternoon these three gals went to Upton Gardens and worked with the seven students that were in class today. Topic -basic health care. They had a great approach. Instead of talking to them, they involved them by asking each one to draw a picture of a health issue that has happened to them, or to someone they know. When the drawings were completed each presented hers to the class. A discussion was held about how the issue was handled and, perhaps, what could have been done differently. Peg C, Marie, Barb, Jessie and Toni went to Upton Gardens in the morning, and started their session with a few yoga poses. Marie led the group offering the girls a potential alternative when they are feeling stressed or out-of-control…yoga. Afterward they presented a painting art project. These girls are very creative! In the afternoon they went to Marian Home (are you catching the GN volunteer switcheroo?) where hand massage, singing, and a lot of visiting took place. Their afternoon ended with a visit to the Corpus Christie Daycare for 15 minutes of baby play time. Bob W also went to Upton Gardens. He made a few adjustments to the four room building we erected two years ago. It will now be used for counselling. He also went with Chuck to Holy Family Children’s Home to assess the maintenance projects that will be needed there. Bob B, Tony and Amby were the truss crew today. They stayed at the APC and cut lumber, measuring twice so they could correctly cut once (OK, so Amby made ONE mistake even after measuring twice) to nearly complete the pieces needed for the paint crew tomorrow. (If you are keeping score, this will be for our second house). Ethel painted. (She is a great painter!) Chuck spent the day driving, Peggy spent the day apprenticing Noella. Over the past two weeks, and the upcoming two weeks, Noella will learn how to coordinate the Good News groups in St Lucia. She’s doing a great job already. (Whew, I’m tired just thinking about everything that was accomplished today!) Our day’s end is an easy story to tell…Some of the group went to the beach when they returned form their journey and some laid low and relaxed here at the APC. We had a very good dinner, a meeting filled with stories of the day and fresh popped popcorn (thanks Alan). Until tomorrow, my dear friends, I bid adieu.
