As the cheapest and most available domestic hydrocarbon, coal is used to generate almost 40% of Americas electricity. However, the fossil fuel has recently come under fire from environmental advocates like the EPA, which specifically targeted CO2 emissions from coal in the Clean Power Plan. Faced with uncertainty over the effects of future federal carbon regulation, which is being currently challenged in court by several states, some in the power industry are trying to reduce emissions from coal through the development of CCS (carbon capture and sequestration) and IGCC (integration gasification and combined cycle). Both technologies are still very expensive and unproven, but there is hope that further innovations could provide an alternative to mass shutdowns of coal-fired power plants, which might have a deleterious effect on the US economy. houstonchronicle/business/columnists/tomlinson/article/Cleaning-up-coal-not-the-greenest-solution-but-5660689.php#/0 nytimes/2014/08/02/business/a-dozen-states-file-suit-against-new-coal-rules.html?_r=0
