As you all know, the real problem in Haiti remains the lack of well-paying jobs in the private sector (ekonomi rashitik). Hence, a government job (job leta), elected or appointed, is the only realistic (and quickest) avenue for educated (or pseudo-educated) men to improve their lives. This explains the lack of patience from politicians to actually wait for their turn and for the completion of any presidential term. Two or Three years into every presidency, there will be people on the streets, burning tires, destroying private property, and otherwise making a nuisance of themselves, with the simple non-stated goal of changing the people in power in the hope that “their” guy can take over and “give them a moto or an envelope”. So, if you are planning on becoming president in 2016, focus on executing what’s important to you in the first 2 years because you will be ousted or rendered impotent by 2019. PS. President Preval’s guerrilla survival instincts told him to appease the opposition, so he paid off the Parliament and most political leaders, and they left him alone to finish both terms.
