Ashton set to get new academy to meet rising demand for school places Another new school is to be built in the borough to help meet the demand for school places. Plans for a new 420-place primary school have been given the go-ahead. Tameside councillors approved plans to build the Inspire Academy at Mossley Road, Ashton. It will also provide 26 full time nursery places. The council is also due to create another 420-place primary school on a plot of land in Hattersley, which will be called the Discovery Academy. Councillor Ged Cooney, executive member for learning, skills and economic growth, said the academies were ‘good news’ for Tameside. He said: “These are the first brand new schools we have had in Tameside in recent years – as opposed to knocking down and re-building an existing schools. They will provide more than 800 places and also 52 nursery places with the schools, so we welcome them.” Councillor Cooney added that the Ashton school has deliberately been sited in an area where demand for school places is projected to rise sharply. The current demand is due to an increase in the birth rate across the borough since 2006 and more families moving to the area due to new housing developments.
